A potentially serious security breach was recently prevented thanks to the alertness and professionalism of a Matrix Security officer on duty for New Zealand Sugar Company Ltd at a wharf facility on the North Shore in Auckland.

While monitoring access near a berthed vessel, the security officer was approached by two individuals requesting permission to board the ship. As their names did not appear on the approved visitor list, access was correctly denied.

Shortly afterwards, the individuals contacted a crew member on board, who came ashore to meet them. During this interaction, an attempt was made to pass a bag from the shore to the crew member.

Recognising the risk, the Matrix Security officer intervened and requested to inspect the bag.

Inside was a large quantity of cigarettes. When the individuals attempted to remove some of the contents, the officer ensured the items remained intact and directed the crew member back to the vessel.

Customs authorities were immediately notified. Customs Officers attended the ship, conducted an inspection, and carried out a search of the crew member’s quarters. As a result of their investigation, the crew member involved was removed from the ship and returned home.

This incident highlights the critical role that strong access control, situational awareness, and confident intervention play in protecting ports and maritime operations. The outcome was a direct result of a guard following procedure, trusting their judgement, and taking decisive action.

“We commend the Matrix Security officer involved for their diligence and professionalism in preventing illegal activity”
